Careers & Work Experience

Careers Advice, Websites and Software

Waldegrave gained the "Investors in Careers (IIC)" award in July 2006, re-accredited in July 2010 for three years. This is a quality standard for the management of careers in schools. Waldegrave is committed to providing a planned integrated programme of careers education, information and guidance for all students of Years 7 - 11 in partnership with the Connexions Service. The careers programme is designed to meet the needs of all students. It is differentiated to ensure progression through activities that are appropriate to students' stages of career learning, planning and development.

The programme includes careers guidance activities (group work and individual interviews), information and research activities (in Room 59), work-related learning (including two weeks work experience), action planning and recording achievement. Other events, e.g. a visit to Richmond upon Thames College, College Information Evening, talks from industry and outside agencies, such as Way to Work are provided in Year 10/11.

The Connexions (Careers) Adviser, is available for individual interviews with Year 10 and 11 students on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Room 59. All students can pop in to see her at break or lunchtime or to use the careers library of books and leaflets.

Work Experience at Waldegrave

'The purpose of a work experience placement is to extend and complement school based learning through direct experience of work roles and the world of work. It contributes to personal development and helps prepare young people for adult and working life’. The Pan London Quality In Work Experience Standard

Work experience at Waldegrave is arranged by Richmond Education Business Partnership (REBP) to help young people to adapt to the world beyond the family and the classroom. It aims to bridge the gap between school and adult life.
Work experience contributes to the development of key skills, encourages maturity and self reliance and supports pupils learning into adult life.

Work experience preparation and follow-up take place in Personal Development and Citizenship (PDC) lessons and English and Modern Foreign Languages. Students take part in interactive activities, have input from outside speakers and have access to ICT software.
