Forensic Science Summer School
Students from Years 7 to 10 enjoyed a Forensic Science Summer School working in teams

to solve a murder case after a 'body' was found dead in a secluded car park on the outskirts of town. The death was investigated by teams of students representing crime scene investigators. The students analysed crime scenes, conducted forensic tests, interpreted evidence and scrutinised statements made by suspects. They used techniques spanning the ages of detection, from fingerprinting through to DNA fingerprinting and analysis. As the complex story unfolded the students had to ensure they worked together to analyse all the information in order to draw a conclusion that fits the evidence! Critical thinking skills were tested to the full! All the students, many of whom hope to follow a science based career, thoroughly enjoyed the week and carrying out the detailed laboratory techniques required for the analyses, even wearing hairnets and gloves to prevent contamination!
