Seacole House

Seacole's House Charity is the Shooting Star Children's Hospice which provides care, support and advice for children and young people with life-limiting conditions. The care is based on the needs of the whole family, so as well as caring for the children and young people, there are activities for siblings and support groups for parents and grandparents.  The services make a real difference to families - sharing the good days, being there every step of the way through the more difficult times.

Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole was a nurse from Jamaica. Hearing of the terrible conditions in the Crimean War and knowing more than most about wounds and infection control, she decided to travel to London to offer her help. On arrival Florence Nightingale turned her down so she made her own way to the Crimea and started treating wounded soldiers from both sides, often on the battlefield whilst under fire. When the war was over she was soon stranded and destitute but was saved by the personal intervention of Lord Rokeby, Commander of the British Forces. She died in 1881 and was buried in London.  She was was forgotten for almost a century but in 2004 Mary Seacole was voted history’s most famous black Briton, an inspirational heroine for people of all backgrounds.
