The Music Department at Waldegrave is lively and vibrant with enthusiastic and dedicated staff who aim to inspire students through class teaching and our extensive extra-curricular programme. We work closely with the other Creative Arts subjects to produce outstanding concerts, productions and lessons.
The Department has two large teaching rooms and seven practice rooms. Each of our teaching rooms is equipped with a projector, a suite of 14 keyboards with disc-drives, a wide range of tuned and un-tuned percussion, a drum kit and a set of African drums. We also have computers in each room which run Sibelius 4 and Cubasis VST. Students also have access to Sibelius software in all of our computer suites and in the LRC. Our practice rooms are equipped with a piano and are large enough to rehearse small ensemble.
The department is very well resources with all major teaching schemes and a vast array of sheet music and reference materials. There are two full-time members of teaching staff and the department is supported by our Music support teacher.
Richmond Music Trust
In addition to this, the music department is also supported by the Richmond Music Trust. It is through the Trust that we offer instrumental lessons. We currently have girls learning: flute, clarinet, saxaphone, bassoon, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, horn, trombone, drum kit, piano/keyboard, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and voice. Students are entered for A.B.R.S.M, Trinity and Rock School examinations.
Music is a very popular and incredibly successful subject with over 75 students currently studying it at GCSE level. During Key Stage 3 all students have the opportunity to perform, compose and listen to many different styles of music from different times and cultures. All students learn to play the keyboard and use the sequencing/recording functions. They also learn to use their voices, percussion instruments (including the drum kit), guitars and music software.
There are many opportunities to perform to friends and teachers both in and out of lessons. Students also have the chance to make recordings of practical work to share with family and friends outside school. Our extra-curricular activities include 2 orchestras, 4 choirs, funk band, 2 (teacher led) rock bands, recorder consort, wind quintet and other chamber groups. We join forces with the Drama department bi-annually to put on our school productions which have all been incredibly well received. Our most recent production was "Cautionary Tales" and we have also performed "Millie","Bugsy", "Titanic" anmd "Revolution".
