THE MAYOR'S AWARD

 

The Mayor's Award is an achievement that recognises the importance of being an active citizen in society and making a contribution to the local community.  It is awarded for activities that take place outside normal lessons.

There are three levels:

  • Bronze:  any two parts
  • Silver:    any three parts
  • Gold:     all four parts

A noticeboard outside Ms Barling's office lists students who have completed Bronze, Silver and Gold.

What the Mayor's Award includes:

During Years 10 and 11 students will complete as many of the following as possible:

  • Work Experience
  • A personal challenge
  • Voluntary work in school
  • Voluntary work outside school hours

The Mayor will present awards in April at a special assembly that is separate from the Record of Achievement presentation.

WORK EXPERIENCE

The students will participate in the working environment during Spring Term in Year 10 for two weeks.

A PERSONAL CHALLENGE

The challenge has to be certified by a teacher or another adult. (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh Award, sponsored walk or bike ride, small group of 3 or 4 organising a major charity event in or out of school).

VOLUNTARY WORK IN SCHOOL

This has to be certified by a teacher. (e.g. paired reading, prefect duty completed diligently for a school year, assisting in reprographics regularly).

  • 62 students gained the Gold Award
  • 21 gained the Silver Award
  • 44 gained the Bronze Award

VOLUNTARY WORK OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS

 

This has to be certifiied by an appropriate adult (e.g. visiting an old person, regular involvement at guides or Sunday School.  Teaching younger children dance or gym, running a club at Waldegrave after school).
