Eliot's charity is the NSPCC

Today, the NSPCC is inspired by a belief that they can make a difference for all children - by standing up for their rights, by listening to them, by helping them when they need us and by making them safe. Their vision is ending cruelty to children in the UK. They believe cruelty is preventable and that through having an inspirational vision they will achieve much greater success for children.

George Eliot

Mary Anne Evans (1819 - 1880), better known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist.

She was one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and psychological insight. Her novels include: The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), and Middlemarch (1872).

She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure that her works were taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names, but Eliot wanted to ensure that she was not seen as merely a writer of romances. Perhaps she also wanted to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals about her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes.
