The Art and Design Department is a vibrant and exciting area of the school where students are encouraged to work individually to support the new curriculum in becoming successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.
The Department has 3 large studios each equipped with an Apple Mac, a projector, digital cameras and a range of PCs. There is a kiln room where clay work is fired and all studios have facilities to teach ceramics. Workshops and clubs are run on a regular basis for pupils who wish to develop their skills and enjoyment of the subject outside the classroom.
Staff within the Department are passionate about art and design and students are encouraged to learn in a positive and stimulating environment where the work of all students’ is respected, valued and displayed. Throughout Key Stages 3 and 4 students create a broad range of outcomes in both two and three dimensional media. All projects include the study of historical and contemporary artists, craftspeople and cultures and topics include drawing, painting, portraiture, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking.
Art and Design is a popular option at GCSE and students enjoy learning through a personalised curriculum where work is evaluated regularly through individual tutorial sessions. The course culminates in the very well attended private view of the artwork each summer term. Art and Design is an incredibly successful option and in 2010 the Department achieved 99% A*-C.
